Juneau, not Anchorage is the State of Alaskas' capital city.
Situated between steep mountains and the Gastineau Channel and served by Alaska Marine ferries, Juneau is the hub where travellers crossing the gulf on the ferries from Whittier and Homer connect to ferries travelling south down the Inside Passage to Bellingham Washington, or north to Skagway
The historic downtown district of Juneau with its rows of shops and restaurants has been beautifully restored and if you want to experience even a part of what the city has to offer, a minimum 2 or 3 day stay is necessary.
Aside from being the Capital of the 49th state, Juneau is known as the home of the Mendenhall Glacier which is located only minutes from the towns' centre & as it calves huge icebergs regularly, is a popular visitor attraction.
Popular in the winter as a ski resort, Juneau is also a good point from which to discover the Glacier Bay National Park. More than 700 miles of trails attract hikers from around the globe and although busy in the summer, a visit to the park no matter how short, should not be missed when visiting Alaskas Capital city.
Ferries starting from the south in Bellingham (travel time about 35 hours) & from the north in Haines (travel time just under 6 hrs) as well as planes from most major Lower 48 airports, provide the only access into or out of Juneau.
While a common question is whether there is a ferry from Vancouver to Juneau, the answer is no. There are no ferries from Vancouver to Juneau. There is however a ferry from Prince Rupert in Canada to Juneau Alaska.
Cross Gulf ferry connections are available from Juneau to Gustavas; Juneau to Whittier and Juneau to Valdez, but all ferry travel absolutely must be booked well in advance.
Juneau has a limited number of hotels & numerous B&Bs - the best of both however are booked months in advance. As soon as your travel dates are confirmed, be sure to book your ferry & lodging to avoid disappointment.
